If you’re thinking about getting your windshield replaced, you’ve probably got a few practical questions. How long will it take? Can you drive the same day? Do you have to go to a shop? We get these questions all the time. Here are the straightforward answers.

How Long Does Windshield Replacement Take?

Most windshield replacements at Blue Ribbon Auto Glass take between 60 and 90 minutes. The actual glass installation is often faster; much of the time is prep work (removing the old windshield and adhesive, cleaning the frame) and the final quality check.

If your vehicle has a windshield-mounted camera that requires ADAS recalibration, add 30–60 minutes. Recalibration is required on most vehicles made after 2018 and ensures your safety systems work correctly after the new glass is installed.

What About Windshield Chip Repair?

A chip repair (for chips smaller than a quarter with no extending cracks) takes 20–30 minutes. A resin is injected into the chip under pressure and cured with UV light. You can typically drive immediately after a chip repair.

Can You Drive After Windshield Replacement?

Not immediately. The adhesive that bonds the glass to the frame needs time to cure. The standard safe drive-away time is typically one hour after installation, though we’ll always give you the specific recommendation for your vehicle. During the curing period:

  •   Don’t drive the vehicle until the recommended cure time has passed
  •   Leave a window slightly open for the first 24 hours to prevent pressure buildup
  •   Avoid car washes for 24–48 hours
  •   Don’t remove any retention tape we may have applied (it comes off after 24 hours)

Do I Have to Go to a Shop?

Not with Blue Ribbon. We offer mobile service throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties. We come to your home, your office, or wherever your vehicle is parked. As long as you’ve got a safe, level spot for us to work, there’s no need to rearrange your day.

Does My Insurance Cover It?

If you have comprehensive auto insurance in Florida, there’s a strong chance your windshield replacement is covered with no deductible. Florida law requires insurance companies to waive the deductible for windshield repair and replacement under comprehensive coverage. Call us and we’ll verify your insurance before we start any work.
