One of the most common things we hear from new customers is some version of this: I had no idea it was that easy. They had been driving around with a chip for weeks or months because they assumed filing an insurance claim would be complicated, time-consuming, or expensive. It is none of those things in Florida.

Here is a clear, step-by-step guide to filing a windshield insurance claim in Florida so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: Confirm You Have Comprehensive Coverage

Windshield claims in Florida fall under comprehensive auto insurance, not collision. If you have a full coverage policy, you almost certainly have comprehensive. If you are not sure, look at your insurance card or your declarations page for the word comprehensive. If it is there, you are covered.

Florida law requires insurance companies to waive the deductible for windshield repair and replacement under comprehensive coverage. This is sometimes called the Florida no-deductible windshield law. It means that as long as you have comprehensive, your out-of-pocket cost is $0.

Step 2: Call Blue Ribbon Auto Glass First

You do not need to call your insurance company first. In fact, calling us first often makes the process faster and simpler. We work with all major insurance carriers and handle the claim verification process on your behalf. When you call us, we will ask for your insurance information, look up your policy, confirm your coverage, and take it from there.

You will not need to file a claim yourself, sit on hold with your insurance company, or navigate an online claims portal. We do that for you.

Step 3: Schedule Your Appointment

Once your coverage is confirmed, we schedule your appointment. Mobile service is available throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties, so we come to your home, your office, or wherever your vehicle is parked. Most windshield repairs take 20 to 30 minutes. Most full replacements take 60 to 90 minutes.

For replacements, if your vehicle has a windshield-mounted camera for ADAS features like lane departure warning or emergency braking, we schedule the camera recalibration at the same time. This is required on most 2018 and newer vehicles and is included in the process.

Step 4: We Handle the Paperwork

After the work is completed, we submit the claim to your insurance company directly. You do not sign anything complicated or handle billing. The insurance company pays us. You pay nothing.

There are a few situations where a deductible might apply: if you have an older policy that predates the Florida no-deductible requirement, or if you have a specialty or non-standard policy. We will flag this before we start any work so there are no surprises.

Will Filing a Claim Raise My Insurance Rates?

This is the most common concern we hear. In Florida, windshield claims under comprehensive coverage are classified as non-fault claims. Filing a glass claim does not count against your driving record and, in most cases, does not affect your insurance premium. This is true for major carriers including State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, and most others operating in Florida.

We always recommend confirming this with your specific carrier if you are concerned, but the answer is almost always no.

What If I Have a Deductible?

If for any reason a deductible applies to your situation, we will let you know the exact amount before any work begins. Many customers find that even with a deductible, the cost of a repair is low enough that it is worth filing. And for a full replacement, the deductible is typically far less than the out-of-pocket replacement cost.

What About Chips vs. Full Replacements?

Florida’s no-deductible law covers both chip repairs and full replacements under comprehensive insurance. A chip smaller than a quarter with no extending cracks is almost always a repair. Anything larger, or any damage that has spread into a crack, is typically a replacement. Both are covered. Both start with the same phone call.
