If you’re a Sarasota local, you know the shift well: sometime in May, the weather changes. The dry, comfortable spring days give way to afternoon thunderstorms that roll in fast and hit hard. By June, you can almost set your watch to the 3 p.m. downpour.

Rainy season in Sarasota runs roughly from May through October, and it brings specific challenges for drivers, including some you might not have considered for your windshield.

Why Rain and Windshields Are More Complex Than You Think

Rain doesn’t damage glass directly, but it does a few things that create real problems over time. It reveals existing chips and cracks. Water filling a small chip makes it more structurally vulnerable. The surface tension of water in a chip, combined with repeated temperature changes (from air conditioning to hot sun), creates stress in the glass that can cause a chip to spread into a crack much faster than in dry conditions.

Rain also accelerates wiper wear. Running wipers on a dirty windshield wears down blade rubber faster and can cause fine scratches on the glass surface over time. And a windshield with even minor scratches or an old chip scatters light differently in a heavy storm, creating glare that reduces visibility, especially at dusk or facing headlights.

The Chip-Spreading Risk Is Real

A chip you’ve had all winter behaves very differently once rainy season arrives. Here’s the sequence:

  1. Rain fills the chip with water
  2. The interior is air-conditioned; the glass surface is warm from sun exposure
  3. The temperature differential creates stress in the glass at the chip point
  4. Chips spread into cracks, often overnight

Once a chip becomes a crack longer than six inches, repair typically isn’t possible and full replacement is required. Catching it now is almost always the cheaper and easier option.

Wiper Blade Check: Don’t Skip This

Wiper blades in Florida have a hard life. UV exposure, heat, and lovebug season all degrade rubber faster than in cooler climates. Signs your wipers need replacing: streaking, skipping, squeaking, or leaving sections of the windshield uncleared. If your blades are more than a year old, replace them before the season starts.

What Florida’s No-Deductible Law Means for You

Florida requires insurance companies to cover windshield repair and replacement without applying a deductible, as long as you have comprehensive coverage. That means if you have a chip or crack and comprehensive insurance, you very likely pay nothing to get it fixed. This applies to both repairs and full replacements.
